Pre-menstrual syndrome (PMS)

Pre-menstrual syndrome is the name given to symptoms experienced before a period. These include both physical and emotional symptoms which can have a significant impact on a woman’s life to varying degrees, including their relationships with others.

Common symptoms include:
  • Bloating

  • Breast tenderness

  • Headaches /Migraines

  • Joint pains

  • Night sweats

  • Sugar cravings

  • Palpitations

  • Bowel symptoms

  • Acne flare up

  • Tearfulness

  • Irritability

  • Low mood

  • Poor sleep

  • Muscle aches

  • Fatigue

  • Weight gain

The cause of PMS is an imbalance between oestrogen and progesterone during the luteal phase (second half) of the menstrual cycle, usually as a result of low progesterone.

A detailed history can help determine if there is an imbalance in your hormones during the second half of your cycle. An holistic approach is once again key in hormonal balance and in some cases body-identical hormones can be beneficial in correcting this balance and hopefully the symptoms of PMS are better controlled.

At The Hormone Health Clinic, we can create a individualised treatment schedule to help meet your needs.
